New York City is easy to get around via subway, bus, bike, cab or walking but the transport is large, complex system so you may need some help initially. For tourists and New York natives it’s possible to reduce the guesswork if you have an app which looks at the system as a whole and lets you work out the easiest route to follow. There are 2 main apps that help you do that.
This one has been around for a few years and a lot use it. It integrates subway, bus, regional rail, walking and bicycling and gives you schedules for buses, trains and ferries. It will also find the nearest subway station or bus stop and gives you travel times and cost for cabs. It does however have one major drawback. It is only available on the iOs (Apple) platform. You can download it here Hopstop
Citymapper is a new app and it offers everything Hopstop offers and it is on both the iOs and Android Platforms. You just type in an address and the app will show you how to get there, whichever way you choose to go, walk, subway or bike etc. Its user reviews have been excellent and because it is available on both platforms it is the preferable to Hopstop. Go here to download it.https://citymapper.com/nyc/superrouter?
If you’re new to the city or caught in an unfamiliar part of NYC this is a great app to orientate you to the nearest wireless hotspot, bar or shop you want to go to. It’s available on iOs, Android or Blackberry platforms and can be downloaded here Mycityway
UBER and LYFT
If your preference is to go by taxi you can stand on the sidewalk and hail a cab if you wish or you can use one of the 2 on demand cab services that operate in NYC.
UBER has been around longer and you can download it from Uber The only wrinkle with Uber which is a very efficient service is that when cabs are in high demand they use surge pricing, i.e. higher prices. This has only happened so far during a bad snowstorm. LYFT is a brand new entrant in the NYC cab scene and it is duking it out with UBER. You can download it here LYFT Both of these apps are available on both iOs and Android.
NEW YORK CITY COMPASS
If you can never tell which direction you are going in Manhattan, Downtown, Uptown or Crosstown, this app will orientate you quicksmart. However another solution is to read this article which will tell you the same information. New York Directions
It is available only on the iOs platform. Download it here
