It’s a terrible, terrible way to find out what happens when two huge buildings collapse in downtown Manhattan. Apart from the immedaite loss of life due to 9/!!, the long term impact on first responders, downtown workers and residents is still playing out year by year.
By 2105 those with cancers related to their 9/11 roles total 3,234 firefighters and other EMS personel and 467 others who lived or worked near Ground Zero.
It is clear there is a link between cancers and the respiratory diseases among people who worked on and around Ground Zero and the toxic materials that were released following the fires and collapse of the twin towers. The incidence of cancers and other diseases in the affected group is far too high for there not to be a link. But scientists are still not clear whether there is a small numbrer of specific causal factors or a multitude of them. The answer will almost definitely be that all diseases are the result of interrelated factors.
As people visit the beautiful and tranquil 9/11 memorial, see the second video, how many are aware that so many brave New Yorkers are still living out a protracted death sentence?
Let us hope that when all the data has been analysed and published there will be protocols put in place to help prevent such a large number of secondary tragedies flowing on from the initial tragedy. Our hearts go out to all those who still suffer from the role they played at Ground Zero when they helped bring sanity and order back to the City.
