As Halloween looms in late October, dig deep into your tortured and twisted souls New Yorkers and decide whether you want to appear sweet and winsome, terrifying and horrible or take on the persona of your favorite singer or TV character when you attend parties or waltz through the Village as part of the big annual Halloween parade. The videos that follow show you some of the places you can get a costume, discover your alter ego or fulfill a long held dress up fantasy. The the first one is Abracadabra Magic and Costume Store at 19 West 21st Strett between 5th and 6th Avenues.
Of course price is also a consideration but you don’t have to spend up big, you just have to feel comfortable in the costume you finally decide to wear. These days the choice is wide. One of the more recent additions to Halloween gear is latex masks that allow you to transform into a horrible witch or a terrifying pirate in an instant. Have a look at this video of Halloween Adventure NYC and see whether you want to buy anything they offer. They have 3 Manhattan locations: 104 4th ave, 311 W 43rd St and 450 6th Ave.
If you have lots of time to gather together a costume then you afford to browse. But if time is short then a trip to one of the biggest Halloween stores or your Vintage Store of choice needs to be approached with a clear idea of what you are after. A fabulous vintage store in Lower East Side is Trash and Vaudeville at 4 St Marks Place near E 8th St.
It’s a good idea to check up on what the weather will be like when you are selecting your costume. If you want to go as Tinker Bell and icy winds are forecast it might be best to also equip Tinks with a nice glamorous cloak that will keep her warm while she’s marching through the Village. The next store to check out is definitely not Tinker Bell territory. It’s the beloved Goth hangout Gothic Renaissance at 110 4th Ave near E 12th St. Steampunk anyone?
And last but not least why not consider going with a group of friends all in superman costumes or some other kind of group get up. The perfect place to kit up as a superhero is the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. at 372 5th Ave, Brooklyn near 5th St. though it has to be admitted that this excellent store does it all rather tongue in cheek so if you want a full on lycra superman outfit go for one of the more tradtional costume stores.
