Fashion is terrific. It’s beautiful, fun, artistic and creative. Anyone can apprecaite the wonder and allure of beautiful people parading around in beautiful clothes on a fashion runway.
But look at this video of rail thin models and the word ‘beautiful’ does not apply, they simply look tortured. It is amazing that any truly creative designer would want to send anyone down a runway looking like this and expect people to focus on the clothes rather than the emaciation.
Now it’s not as though every model in NYC loks like this or even a majority, but there are unrealistic standards of weight and height still demanded of NYC runway models. Yes efforts have been going on since 2007 to elevate health over thinness, reality over distorted bodies when it comes to models but the health push is still getting bogged down in the most ridiculous arguments.
Attempts by the Council Of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and specifically NYC designers like Kate Spade and Diane Von Furstenburg, to ensure health is taking into account when selcting models for runway shows, have been described by some as attempts at ‘body shaming’ naturally thin people.
Phooey. this is political correctness gone mad. The women in this video do not look like this naturally, they have starved themselves so they look like Belsen inmates. They should be helped to value their health above all else not encouraged or rewarded for meeting unnatural standards of body thinness.
The health push is doing better and better with new standardsw being set all over the modelling world. The CDFA is doing its best as are equivalent bodies in Europe and Israel. And at least girls under 16 are now banned from NYC runways. Starving grown ups is bad but starving children is criminal.
NYC designers have got to step up to the plate and simply refuse to select young women who have starved themselves. Agencies and models would soon stop supporting silly behavior if it it was never rewarded. Select models for their natural grace rather than having bodies which meet an artificially low weight criteria. Let’s have an outbreak of healthy commonsense in the fashion world.
