Every year the Kennedy Centre in Washington honors living artists who have made a large and lasting contribution to the performing arts in the US.
This year Opera Singer Martina Arroyo and Billy Joel are to honoured along with 3 others.
Martina Arroyo is a New York native who grew up in Harlem and did both her regular schooling and her voice training in New York.
She retired in 1989 but before she did she had a hugely celebrated career as an operatic soloist at the Met and in opera houses around the world.
Billy Joel needs no introduction to New Yorkers. Also New York born and bred he has lived almost his entire life here, a hugely successful song writer and performer.
