It’s the time of the year when everyone starts yearning for spring, sunlight and warmth, anything but this biting cold. Yes it’s 3 degrees out there as I write.
So how do you warm yourself up to life and the wonders thereof when outside is frigid? I polled some New Yorkers and compiled this list. Unsurprisingly it’s chock full of food, drink, fires and distractios.
Favorite food and drinks are the mainstays for most New Yorkers trying to escape the winter blues. And their most favorite drink is hot chocolate with a preferance for the type made with real chocolate though those addicted to real homemade cocoa run a vey, very close second. Have fun finding your absolutely favorite hot chocolate/cocoa on sale near you and then use it as your reliable pick-me-up when winter is getting you down.
Next standout food choice is a bag of your favorite fresh baked cookies, the first one of which you eat fresh out of the oven when it’s still Warm. Then of ourse you take home a bag for when you need a refill.
Pizza is a reliable standby provided it is piping hot and loaded with cheese and pepperoni, none of the fancy mansy stuff when you’re shivering. But if you want to change up the tune, other ethnic based foodsi is equally well desgned to nurture your flagging spirit: borscht, bratwurst and pho are all tried, true and very popular winter foods.
Now an open, roaring fire does the trick to get a bit of warmth going, especially one you can snuggle up in front of. So this means you’ve got to find a bar in NYC that’s got one, hopefully with deep chairs or lots of bench space around it so it’s pleasures are not confined to a few. Hint The Bowery Hotel has the City’s best open fire place/deep armchair combo but you have to fight the hotel’s residents to get a spot near it so plan your archair stealing campaign carefully.
If you manage to find a bar, a roaring fire and an armchair, a good book is a great companion. And of course wait staff who will bring you snacks and booze on demand is much appreciated as well.
But if all else fails, stay at home out of the cold, make sure the heating is turned right up, line up your favorite snacks, make yourself a big jug of hot chocolate and binge watch Netflix. And if you want company I’m sure, with those attractions, you will have no trouble at all finding one, two or a dozen.
