You know what it’s like. It’s raining, you’re late, you want a cab and so do thousands of other New Yorkers. Snarls, bad temper and missed opportunities are the least of what can happen.
So having one of the latest apps, like Hailo, Uber, Flywheel and Zabkab are a great idea because you can just order a cab up, right? Well no. There’s now a lawsuit to stop yellow cabs using these apps.
Under current law yellow cabs must pick up anyone kirbside who hails them. Black cars must only pick up people who have ordered their services in advance. Black cars are saying the news apps upset this arrangement. Thanks Lawyers.com for the succint story of the legal ins and outs.
The black car business is worth $2.5 billion a year so naturally they want to stop encroachment from yellow cabs. And it is always possible yellow cabs will just get worse at not ‘seeing’ people hailing them kerbside.
A one year ehail program was set to be run as a trial to see whether the new apps had a role to play in the yelllow cab business. The black cars are opposing this.
Meanwhile commuters miss out. How’s this for an idea, let communters pick yellow or black cabs regardless and use apps if they want to. In other words open the market right up. COMMENT on whether you think this is a good solution.
