If you go down to the Jacob Riis Landing in Rockaways, Queens, you stand a good chance of seeing a humpback whale just like the one in this video.
The new sightings of whales are the result of strenuous conservation efforts to recreate the conditions which would allow whales to return to these bay waters. And indeed the whales have now come back delighting all who see them.
Sometimes you can see them from onshore but you may need to take one of the special whale watch cruises now available that take you right out into the Atlantic. Even then, there’s sometimes a wait to see some come by. But it is totally worth it. Once these majestic creatures swam in large numbers in the waters off NYC but they got fished into extinction. Let’s celebrate, they are now back.
