It’s been a long, long battle, but finally, after 18 years of being banned, MMA has now been legalized in New York. This makes it the 50th State to allow professional cage fighting.
The Body overseeing MMA, the UFC, has already booked a bout at Madison Square Grden in November and you can bet there will indeed be plenty of other lesser matchups prior to this big one. After all the UFC stands to make millions on the deal.
The objectors to the legislation are still worried about the health effects of MMA but the general feeling is that bringing the sport out into the open will allow proper regulation and oversight by the New York Athletic Commission.
And of course New York State will get a cut of the revenue the sport generates. But surely that’s not the main reason it has finally been allowed…is it?
