Leave it to the New York Times to belatedly sniff out the new relationship between men/fashion/style and where the heads of New York City’s males are at, especially when there’s a business opportunity that’s part of the deal. Namely the not inconsiderable fact that NYC’s men are now buying more and more expensive fashion items than ever before. So the NYTimes have just this month debuted a new men’s style supplement in their long time, must read Style section of the newspaper which is now aimed squarely at all NYC fashion aficionados, male and female.
The NYTimes Style section has been effortlessly feminine in its focus forever, but Times execs got a shock when they looked at readership figures and found that it was now as popular with male readers as it was with female ones. Then there’s all those men buying up fashion clothing and footwear plus the increasing number of fashion ads in all the relevant magazines and newspapers. And to top it all off there’s a rapidly expanding readership for articles everywhere not just on men’s style but grooming and well… the male presentation of self, the art of it.
It suddenly became a no brainer that it’s not just about David Beckham, Jay Z and Pharrel Williams liking to look not just good but outstanding. This is now a worthy area of self expression for guys full stop. Look at the glee on the faces of the guys photographed by Bill Cunningham in New York’s Streets, if anything they outshine the gals. So New York guys, probably the NYTimes is just catching up with you and you’ve known where it has been at for quite some time, but there’s something to be said for the oldsters acknowledging your place in the fashion universe even if they are a bit late to do so.
